The raucous Linus’ Talent Show puts a group of would-be stars in the hands of a merciless Cologne audience at the Tanzbrunnen open-air theatre on the banks of the Rhine. The Talentprobe has become a local summer institution.
It takes nerve to step onstage before this crowd: equipped with noisemakers and sarcastic banners, audience members don’t waste any time letting sub-standard amateur performers hear their opinions.
If they don’t like a reedy-voiced singer or maladroit dancer, the audience are apt to turn their backs on the stage, start singing carnival songs or hurling insults at the hapless performer. But if one of the ambitious wannabes wins the hearts of the locals, they break into frantic applause.
